What’s In a Name?

Before settling on a name for my new venture, I invested a lot of thought and energy into determining what to call it.  I cycled endlessly through eponymous titles (Connor Consulting, TC Acoustics), cliché ideas (Sound Advice, Sound Designs), and odd but potentially memorable appellations (Barn Owl Acoustics, deciBel). I flip-flopped, wavered, and sometimes woke inspired in the middle of the night only to detest my scribbled ideas the following morning. Nothing felt right.

In search of inspiration, I started reflecting on my journey to this niche profession, what had brought me to this turning point in my career, the services I’ve provided, and the plethora of projects I’ve completed. I sought to find a common theme, a pattern, a drive that connects all of them when inspiration finally struck.

I’ve dedicated the last 20 years of my life to better understanding acoustics and its effects on humans; it has been the backbone of everything I studied and focused on throughout my career.

I’ve never recommended or designed anything without putting the physics, the research, the foundational knowledge and principles of acoustics into practice. I call upon these principles when working with clients to tackle the simplest of issues (“How thick should our acoustical panel be?”) to the more complex challenges (“What is the highest percentage of glazing we can incorporate into the façade while still achieving code compliance?”).

In science and math, the body of principles, theorems, or the like, belonging to one subject is referred to as the theory of that subject. Thus, Theory In Practice (TIP) Acoustics. The name felt perfect. It embodies the scientifically-backed and methodical approach I’ve employed for all of my clients over the years.

TIP Acoustics looks forward to opportunities to provide you, your team, and your clients with acoustical services firmly rooted in science, experience, and passion.
